Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess tissue from the abdomen. If necessary, the abdominal muscles can also be tightened during the same operation.

Excess tissue in the abdominal area is not only aesthetically unpleasant, but also functional. The patients affected usually suffer greatly and wish they could feel comfortable in their skin again. There are many causes of sagging abdominal tissue. Pregnancy and rapid weight loss are the main causes.

The prolonged stretching of the abdominal wall can cause the elastic fibres of the skin to tear. If there is then a rapid reduction in the abdominal circumference, the skin can no longer shrink with it and cannot adapt to the new silhouette. In addition, the straight abdominal muscles also diverge due to the increased volume. If this gap remains between the muscle bellies after childbirth or weight loss, for example, it is referred to as rectus diastasis. Both the extended skin and the widened gap between the muscles cannot be completely eliminated despite intensive exercise.

A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthetic. A different surgical method is used depending on the individual findings. If the excess skin is only below the belly button, a so-called mini abdominoplasty can be performed. If the entire abdomen is affected, the belly button must also be moved. Liposuction of the flanks is often used to achieve the best possible aesthetic result.
