White spot disease or vitiligo is a chronic disease with patchy discoloration of the skin. Inhibition or destruction of the pigment-forming cells means that the skin can no longer pigment.

The tendency to develop vitiligo is probably inherited. The causes are still unclear. It is thought to be an autoimmune disease in which the body's own substances destroy the pigment cells.
Vitiligo most commonly appears on the face, neck, back of the hands and genital region. It does not cause any symptoms and is not contagious. Due to the aesthetic impairment, those affected are sometimes severely restricted in their quality of life.
Vitiligo cannot be cured and the course of the disease is unpredictable. Treatment of the face and neck is usually more successful than treatment of the body.
Forms of therapy are often combined. Creams containing cortisone or calcineurin inhibitors are used as local therapy. Light therapy, which is also offered at Dermanence, stimulates the pigment-forming cells. This is carried out over several months.
Good sun protection is important for everyday life, as the light-colored areas are more prone to sunburn.
